Random 'Adventure' themed sketch...

S'up y'all! Ok so currently working on my next VMPV [the last two in case you missed them, 'TERROR' & 'MORLOCKS']; but I'm also doing a few smaller projects [exercises really] in between just to keep creativity & discovery flowing... I'll make a little post & fill you in on what my next poster will be based on but for now, here's a little piece I started working on the other day. Going as planned so far, so hopefully I can carry the rest through in the same direction.

Ah, almost forgot to add I'm actually trying a different technique here to what I'm normally used to. I'm working monochromatically to begin with, then adding colour after. I'm sure many of you are very familiar with this method but I've actually never tried it... I'd come close, but then as my very impatient brain can be at times, it would all of a sudden begin calculating colour combinations & ideas; next thing you know, I've thrown a bucket of red paint over the entire thing & dabbing away at colours like an overexcited 6yr old >=D

Anyway, for those who don't know, this process is to help establish your *Tonal Values* right from the get go before jumping in with colour [which is incredibly important]... There are various ways to go about adding colour once values are established but I think this totally makes sense [as one good option].

I've seen a lot of videos & heard a lot of people encourage the use of this technique; so far for me it's definitely working. For those who are a little unsure of how to go about it, here's a little crash course I came across by the talented Dave Rapoza... Another vid that's worth checking out is this one by Marco Bucci; a slightly different approach but more or less he does mention these same principals at 02:50.

Happy painting!
Ps: & this was supposed to be a short post = O

Random 'Western' themed sketch...

Believe it or not, there was one [very small] stage in my preadolescent life where I actually wanted to be *Fantasised* about being a great, bow-legged Cowboy... Yup!... As every kid did I'm sure, I used to watch a load of Western John wayne & Clint Eastwood movies; Rawhide too every Sunday so no wonder really. Thankfully though I wised up & realised just how melodramatic TV made the Cowboy lifestyle seem...[it wasn't for me]; although back in mid 18th- early 19th century, I'm sure it was probably no joke being one... Anyways here's my lil random 'Western' themed piece for this week.

Random 'Noir' themed sketch...

A little W.I.P. of a 'Noir' themed 'Femme Fatale' piece... It's pretty late/ very early morning right now [don't ask why I'm still up], so not gonna write too much about this here, but I will say I've secretly always had a thing for vintage photography such as >this<... Pure elegance...Should have the finished piece up later today... Hopefully get time to do a few more & explore this whole look at some point ; )

'Sea Monsters' continued...

Here's where I'm at with this concept. A lot still to add but really just using this as a study piece... Not quite sure what deal's going down here with these two characters, but feel free to interpret.

'Sea Monsters' sketch...

SketcHHousE PoWER HoUR back on... Come join in!

The main objective in this new 'term'? To develop greater imagination & creativity within conceptual art [character design, creature design, landscape, set design etc]... Here's a sketch from yesterday mornings session. We've kicked things off again with the theme 'Sea Monsters'. I quite liked the concept here so decided I'd flesh it out a little more & see what life I could bring into it. Will post it up wherever it's at tomorrow morning.

SketcHHousE 'POWER HOUR' [Week: #06]

The ONE painting I had time to do during the week [at the very bottom]... Decided to spend a little more time to flesh things out on this one [although it's still really a sketch], since I only had time for one session this week. Really trying to think about the many ways light behaves & interacts with objects;
how & when shadow is cast, the subtle effects of 'bounce light' [& or refractions], using varied tones to generate depth/ distance etc [so much to think about]. There's a lot more going on out there than seems at first glance & it blows my mind just thinking about it!

SketcHHousE 'POWER HOUR' [Week: #05]

OK, so this post comes a few days late due to outside work taking over my life but here's last weeks batch of studies. We've now moved over to shadow & lighting as a theme, which is something I always love to explore & experiment with given the opportunity.

Just to name a few personal sources of inspiration I have on this subject matter: I've always loved the overly dramatic style of lighting found in early Film noir movies & film posters of the 1950's [more & more I find myself leaning towards this direction in personal work]... Also, a few preferred artists [comic mainly] I've long been in awe of for their unique take on lighting contrasts are, Simon Bisley, Frank Frazetta, Mike Mignola & of course Frank Miller... & as I feel the sudden need to yell out, "Yeah yeah, I know, typical"... well 'typically' these were some of the guys who's styles captivated me as a young comic-obsessed teen... what can you say, they did it well.
All in all, I'm looking forward to exploring this topic further over the next few weeks so stick around & let me know what you think.

Have a stress-free weekend = )
